The Polar Palms Nursery

Owned by Kiril Donov, M.Sc. Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture

The Polar Palms Nursery was created to satisfy the demand for cold hardy palms in Bulgaria and Europe. This is an example of how a hobby could be transformed in a good business with a market niche. Today is very difficult to start a business with little or no competition. Producing and selling hardy palms is such a market niche. And if someone has spent 5 years for M.Sc. degree in Tropical and subtropical agriculture there is no doubt, it's time to see the palms in our cities!

The nursery is located just 5 km (3 miles) away from Plovdiv, on the highway to Assenovgrad. The Rhodopa mountain is just south of the nursery and to the north and east the lowland is wide opened.

In our nursery we sell more than 350 different species and varieties of plants. Most of them we import from abroad. Our own production is still not much, but we constantly increase the list of the plants grown.

We have 1500 sq.m. of glass greenhouse, which will be built in summer of 2003. There are also 3 large plastic greenhouses and the total land of the nursery is about 45 000 sq.m. our own land.

At the present moment we produce in the nursery:

1. Palms - Bulgarian Trachycarpus fortunei; Phoenix canariensis, dactylifera and theophrastii; Washingtonia filifera and robusta; Sabal minor and palmetto; Butia capitata; Trachycarpus takil and wagnerianus; Chamaerops humilis; Rhapidophyllum hystrix;
2. Evergreen and exotic shrubs - many varieties of Euonimus; Laurocerasus; Laurus; Feijoa; Eleagnus; Buxus; Aucuba; Fatsia; Oleanders; Citrus; Rosmarinus; Hedera, Pittosporum; Lagerstroemia; Viburnum; Berberis; Pyracantha; Yucca; and some more.
3. Trees - various conifers (Cupressus, Pinus, Thuya and some more); Magnolia; Eucalyptus; Betula; Quercus; Tilia; and some more.

All zone 7, 8 and 9 plants we grow in the unheated greenhouses. If everything is alright, in summer 2003 we should built a small heated greenhouse for tropical plants.

We now employ 12 people. In summer 2003 we should plant many new plants on our land and the number of people in our team will probably increase on a seasonal basis.

All these large palms we import from Greece, Turkey or Italy.
